2. We were going to watch a movie today but SOMEONE (Mr. Pitts) had trouble finding it. We'll try to watch it next Thursday or Friday instead. Sorry! 3. Go to http://www.caldwellcountync.org/ and read about our county! Jot down a few notes so we can talk about it. Find out the following things:
1. Finish the questions from yesterday and any missing work.
2. Check out this map of tax credit change with the American Healthcare Act, the potential replacement for the ACA. See what the tax cuts for our county are at various ages and incomes. How are they different from the tax cuts under ACA? 3. Work on any extra credit you may have missed. I'll take them until tomorrow. Go to the American BAR Association's website. Use the links on this page to answer the following questions. Read the whole thing over the next two days. This is a good primer on how court cases work.
1. What is the difference between a civil and criminal case? 2. What is "settling" in regards to a trial? What type of trial can be settled? 3. In a criminal case, a defendant can do something prior to the trial to lessen their sentence at times. What is this called? What does it require? Hint: Look in the section on settling. 4. What is the formal process of exchanging information between the parties about the witnesses and evidence they’ll present at trial? What is a written order issued by a court compelling a person to testify or produce certain physical evidence such as records? 5. What are the three ways that criminal charges can be brought against someone? 6. What rights are read to a person who is arrested? Why are these required to be read to them? What must happen for an arrested person to be held longer than 48 hours? 7. Who are the officers of the court? What do they do? 8. How many people are selected for a jury? What is the process of questioning potential jurors called? 9, What reasons can cause a trial to be called a mistrial? 10. What types of evidence are allowed in court? What is the difference between the two? Your civics exam will have two constructed response questions. We'll be practicing them around once or twice a week in order to prepare from here on out.
Constructed responses are easily answered using the ACE formula. Answer Cite Explain Reword the question as an answer. Whoever is reading your response should be totally sure of what question you are answering. Give an example to back up your response, and then explain why your example proves your answer. I would keep your response between four to six sentences. We'll do two. They're due today. Do not talk until you have completed your work. Unlike your exam, you are not expected to know all of this material yet. You may use the internet or your book for research if you wish. These will be graded for your answer as well as the quality of your writing. Write in third person only. 1. Why does North Carolina split its trial court system into district and superior courts? 2. Why do the state appeals and supreme court not use juries to make their decisions? 1. Read about Caldwell County's Court System here. Click around and read some of the articles.

Wikileaks, a repository of "totally-legal" leaked documents, released some data on the information collecting abilities of CIA, the US's foreign intelligence agency, and MI5, England's counterpart. Read about it here. 3. Read sections two and three of chapter 13 in your Civics book. Jot down the vocab in your notebook. For some extra credit on Test #4, do the following assignment.
Find five bills that Destin Hall, our representative to Raleigh, has sponsored since February 25th. Summarize what each of them intend to do. Give a two to three sentence per each bill. Read the following links. Take down a few notes so you can remember this gist. We're gonna talk about them, and I'd love to hear your thoughts.
1. The Republicans released their Obamacare replacement plan. Read about it here. 2. Foreign policy is a tricky subject. The American government must at times engage in a careful balancing act between doing what is right and what does not anger a foreign ally. China is a chief example of this. Scan around this article and take a few notes on what is happening with Taiwan. Read about their relations with Trump a bit further down the page. 3. On the topic of China, the Dalai Lama is a controversial figure. The Dalai Lama is the spiritual leader of Tibetan Buddhism, a role similar to the Catholic church's Pope, and a figurehead of Tibet. Read up on what's going on with him here. 1. Take the poll from last week's post below if you haven't already.
